Nobody Likes a Smartass is Mickey Hess' first book. He wrote it when he was 19. He felt like he knew what he was doing back then in a way he has never felt since.
Years later, when he was feeling pretty terrible about his writing, a girl whose signature he could never decipher sent him this letter in the mail:
"One time when I was pretty drunk somebody said something about this book "Nobody Likes a Smartass" and I've been half-assedly looking for it ever since. About a year. I just moved to Chicago, went into Quimby's and there it was. Self published, now I get it. Who cares, right?
So I was reading it on the bus the following day, bursting into embarrassing fits of gut-burning laughter. By the time I finally closed the book and got off the bus I probably looked like I'd been doing bong hits for several hours when in fact it was just good, wholesome literature. High! Can you imagine?"
